How PVC Liners Have Changed in Recent Years
PVC liners are still among the most widely used pool coatings in the world, mainly because they are the most well-known system and, to this day, the most affordable option on the market.
However, in recent years the industry has undergone major changes, accompanied by a new level of consumer awareness. In the past, PVC liners could last as long as 20–25 years, whereas today this is no longer the case.
The main reason is linked to the introduction of new regulations and standards that have rightly restricted the use of certain substances previously employed in liner production, as they were harmful to both people and the environment. This has led to the creation of less aggressive materials, but also less durable ones, resulting in a shorter overall lifespan for the coating.
There are also important aesthetic differences: new-generation liners tend to be less color-stable and may gradually fade over time. Within approximately ten years, it is therefore common to either replace the liner or accept a loss of brightness and color vibrancy in the pool.
Another structural limitation must also be considered: PVC is made up of overlapping sheets with visible seams that affect the final appearance of the pool. This is evident in both skimmer pools and infinity-edge pools, where the waterline tends to become dirty easily and requires frequent and demanding maintenance.
In light of all these considerations, although PVC liners are still widely used, they can now be regarded as a mature technology that is gradually destined to be replaced by more modern, high-performance, eco-friendly, and aesthetically superior solutions.
The History of Powder Coatings
The history of powder coating began between the late 1940s and early 1950s, at a time when organic polymers were sprayed onto metal surfaces. Later, in the early 1960s, the electrostatic powder coating process was developed in the United States and, from the early 1980s onward, expanded steadily throughout the world up to the present day.
Today, the powder coating market is a constantly growing sector and one of the most promising within the swimming pool industry.
Why Is Ecofinish Coating So Special?
Because it is a type of coating that solves the typical problems associated with PVC liners, plaster-based coatings, and paints. Ecofinish coating offers the resistance, durability, and ease of maintenance of traditional coatings, while preserving their beauty and color richness.
What Are Its Main Features?
• Long-term anti-corrosion protection – Waterproofing function, electrical insulation, and chemical resistance. It does not chip, crack, or peel. These are extremely important characteristics when it comes to swimming pools, where everything is constantly submerged in water and therefore tends to deteriorate, wear out, fade, and so on.
• Resistance to stains and discoloration – Accelerated QUV weathering tests simulate in the laboratory the damaging effects of UV sunlight and humidity on polymer coatings, allowing their long-term resistance to be evaluated even under particularly harsh conditions. In this case, the sample underwent 3,000 hours of QUV testing. This resistance is also the basis of another major advantage of the coating: its exceptional aesthetic stability. Unlike traditional PVC liners, it does not undergo color changes over time, even when exposed to chemicals or aggressive environments. The result is a uniform and consistent color finish over the years, with a pool that maintains an intact, stable, and refined appearance.
• Easy repairs – Pools coated with Ecofinish have never required significant structural maintenance. Any future interventions, for example in the case of small cracks, are simple and quick: the affected area only needs to be sanded and restored, with no visible color differences.
• No constant cleaning of the waterline required – It does not absorb the dirt that naturally forms in pools on a daily basis, keeping the surface more stable and easier to maintain. As a result, cleaning the waterline becomes far less frequent, shifting from a weekly routine to approximately once every month and a half, with considerable savings in both time and maintenance.
• No seams or overlapping joints – From an aesthetic point of view, the material is completely homogeneous, with no visible joints or overlaps, ensuring a clean and uniform final result. In addition, unlike other systems such as traditional paints, which require reapplication every 2–3 years, this coating maintains a stable appearance over time without significant color alterations, making it extremely durable.
How Does It Work?

The final result is a pool with a uniform color finish and a highly refined aesthetic appearance, free from seams or overlapping liner joints, which are honestly quite unattractive.
Colors and Finishes
