Body and spiritual wellness

Taking care of the body and the attention to wellness was one of the most practiced and loved activities since Romans. During their spare time they crowded thermae to heal their body, doing sports socialize and relax.

The attention to the body, which included exercises, steam baths, oils and swimming was considered as a vital activity to maintain both the mental and physical force of the soldiers and of the citizens.

They used to love swimming and they did it since they were children. This healthy activity was part of the education and personal development of the young people. In order to measure the diffusion of swimming during the ancient Rome, we may take into account that they built 800 pools, some of them could also welcome 1000 persons!

The balneum was an actual thermal system, initially thought as public pool. The actual common pools were natatio and they usually were outside pools, located next to gyms. Every pool had a cold-water basin and a hot-water one, provided thanks to the sospensure with a furnace just below where slaves worked.

The thermae and public pools, enriched by mosaics, fountains and statues, were free-access to both rich and poor people, as they were not considered as luxuries, but as what elevated the roman citizen (including the most humble one) above the barbarian rude one. They were also used as system to educate and teach personal hygiene.

Thanks to these abilities, romans were capable of improving their lifestyle and of taking care of both spiritual being and body.
